A robot strengthens the team at Damme Kunststoffen

At Damme Kunststoffen in Amsterdam, a compact team produces plastic storage tanks, drip trays and other custom products for a wide range of sectors. The company is small, with only a handful of employees. Even so, Damme Kunststoffen decided to bring in an extra pair of hands on the shop floor, in the form of a welding robot.

Automation is not yet standard in the plastic welding industry. While robot welding has been common practice in the metal sector for years, plastic welding often remains manual work. That manual work is physically demanding. Extrusion welding requires strength, precision and stamina, and just as in the metal sector, skilled workers are becoming increasingly scarce.

Valk Welding has been automating the welding process for the metal industry for more than 45 years. Valk Welding is now applying that expertise to automate plastic welding as well. A good plastic weld depends on three factors: temperature, speed and welding pressure. Together, these determine the quality of the weld. In extrusion welding, hot air heats the base material, after which ground and plasticised welding wire is added. A robot keeps these factors stable and so produces a consistent weld, even in places that are difficult for a welder to reach.

Together with Damme Kunststoffen, Valk Welding built a system that strengthens the welding process. The foundation consists of a Panasonic LA-1800 welding robot with a Munsch extruder. The LA-1800 has a reach of 1800 mm and a payload of 26 kilos, which makes the robot highly suitable for the plastic welding process. The robot stands on a pedestal, and in front of the robot is a Panasonic manipulator in a horizontal position with an octagonal welding table, which rotates the product around the vertical axis. The manipulator moves in harmony with the robot, making it possible to produce seamless, high-quality welds.

For Damme Kunststoffen, the arrival of the new robot installation means consistent weld quality, less physical strain on employees and a production process that is ready for the future. Automated welding does not replace craftsmanship, but strengthens it. That step pays off for small companies too.
